As your constituent, I urge you to cosponsor the Patients’ Right to Know Their Medication Act (H.R. 6519) introduced by Reps. Jared Golden, Buddy Carter, Dutch Ruppersberger, and Bruce Westerman. This bill seeks to improve patient safety by consistently providing patients with basic information about their prescription drugs.

There is currently no standard for patient medication information (PMI), which typically accompanies prescription drugs dispensed to patients. In fact, there is no requirement that this information is distributed with the medication at all. PMI contains critical details about using and administering medications, including directions, warnings, and side effects. Patients and their caregivers are vulnerable to unnecessary healthcare costs without access to reliable and easily understood medication information.

This bipartisan legislation amends the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to require a standardized, FDA-approved, paper format PMI to accompany every prescription drug distributed and dispensed for outpatient use. As a result, patients will better understand the pertinent information necessary to avoid preventable adverse drug events, saving patients and the health care system millions of dollars.
